Philip Lutolf’s new watch is about power!

I’ve been writing about watches for some time now and have always wondered how they keep on improving these almost perfect machines. And now to add to my further amazement, Philip Lutolf just added to its repertoire, a wristwatch, which uses helical springs instead of spiral springs to generate power. These springs produce 20 times the power as compared to the usual spiral spring. According to Lutolf, this watch is not about power reserve but it’s about power. I wonder maybe someday they’ll add a car engine to a watch! The design may be unveiled by January 2009, and it may cost anywhere between half a million to a million Swiss Francs. via:watchismo

Who would not be a fan of the cool and sophisticated James Bond? Or should I say 007? The character of James Bond introduced a new concept to menswear- power dressing. There is a famous saying in the English language- A man is known by the shoes he wears. Let me modify this statement and state that ‘A man is known by his attire’. James Bond, in all his movies, personified elegance and style. This is the reason why ‘007’ was so popular with females across the world. Introduced on big screen in the year 1962, 007 movies have always set the box-office on fire. Sean Connery was the original James Bond. Actors like George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig also played the famous ‘007’. Though I am a big fan of Mr. Connery, Pierce Brosnan has been my favorite ‘007’. Flicks like ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, ‘The World Is Not Enough’, and ‘Die another Day’ never fail to impress me. The character of 007 not only ruled the big screen, it also invaded comics and the television. James Bond video games were also quite profitable. Known for his passion for girls and gadgets, James Bond had an immaculate dressing style. His tailored suits and stylish watches became world famous. It would be not an exaggeration to say that James Bond was the epitome of men’s fashion. James Bond, in all his movies, frequented casino resorts. He would often meet his ladylove there. The famous ‘007’ ringtone is still a hit with teenagers. James Bond movies have survived the test of time. Even today, when Daniel Craig appeared in James Bond movies such as ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Quantum of Solace’, people around the world could not help falling in love with 007, yet again. 007 will always rule our hearts and minds. Can there ever be too much bling?

Bling is a term coined in hip-hop culture and used to describe gaudy and elaborate jewellery as well as highly decorated personal accessories such as cell phones and dental caps. It is a term that is extensively used by rappers in rap music. The term supposedly describes the effect of a beam of light striking platinum or diamonds. Diamonds are, by the way, the major staple of bling. Comedians like Martin Lawrence used the term to parody the bell sound in the famous “Ultra-brite smile” of the 1980s. The term was used to describe the gold teeth and flashy pimp jewellery of the lowdown character Jerome in the TV series called Martin. The first reference in rap music was in 1999 in the hit song “Bling Bling” and the lyrics went “Everytime I come around your city bling bling; Pinky ring worth about 50 bling bling; Everytime I buy a new ride bling bling; Lorenzo’s on Yokahama tires bling bling.” the term has moved well beyond the argot of rap and hip-hop and is now widely used everywhere. In an unusual turn of events, many of the rappers who contributed to the popularity of the term are now turning away from it. The rapper known as Fat Joe stated, “Rappers don’t call jewelry ‘bling’ anymore, we just call ‘em “diamonds”. Several major members of the hip-hop establishment such as Public Enemy and the Puerto Rican Tego Calderon are believed to have refused to wear flashy and expensive jewellery as a protest against the bling culture. Missy Elliot has said that hip hop stars have a responsibility to act as role models and to encourage young people to invest sensibly. If the jewellery is tasteful and well-designed, like Tacori engagement rings, then there is probably no such thing as too much bling. However, if you have the money and the freedom to flaunt it, go right ahead.

What makes a watch expensive is not the precious gemstones that adorn it; instead, it is the craftsmanship that differentiates a high quality watch from the ordinary.
